Berlanga’s “Hit List”: Munguia, Charlo, And A Canelo Rematch

Edgar Berlanga posted a short clip of his new defensive moves on X, presumably showing how he plans to fight to protect his chin in his bout on March 8th. He’s rumored to fight 39-year-old journeyman Gabriel Rosado (26-17-1, 15 KOs) next in Puerto Rico. Neither of them is from that country, but they have ancestral roots.

The movement Edgar, 27, displayed in the clip seems impossible to sustain without him gassing out due to his colossal cruiserweight-sized physique and moving 190+ lbs around the ring will tire out Berlanga, making him easy prey for whoever he faces.

He’ll be food if he faces someone good, like Diego Pacheco or Osleys Iglesias. However, moving constantly will leave the Brooklyn native an easy mark, even for the bottom feeders in the 168-lb division.

He’d reportedly rehydrated to 193 lbs for his one-sided loss to Canelo Alvarez last year on September 14th and looked huge inside the ring against the tiny 5’8″ champion.

The Hit List

In the caption on the clip, Berlanga said, “Hit list coming.” However, he already posted his six-fight hit list last month, naming these fighters that he wants:

– Jaime Munguia
– Jermall Charlo
– Caleb Plant
– Hamzah Sheeraz
– Canelo Alvarez – rematch
– Diego Pacheco

Munguia On His Mind

Berlanga said this six-fight hit list wasn’t put together in order. However, he’s repeatedly said that he wants the Munguia next because he believes that a victory over him will get him a speedy rematch with Canelo. He made a reported $10 million for that fight, so it’s understandable why he would want a fast rematch against the Mexican superstar.

The highly ranked super middleweight contender Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) was dropped hard in the third round by unified 168-lb champion Canelo Alvarez on September 14th and essentially reduced to that of a punching bag for the Mexican star for the entire one-sided contest.

Many believe Alvarez intentionally carried the Brooklyn, New York native Berlanga to avoid the backlash that would have come had he destroyed him in a quick knockout. Berlanga had beaten no one notable in the top 15 to rate a title shot, but he was given the opportunity based on his following in New York City.

Despite Berlanga’s defeat, he’s ranked #3 WBO, #4 WBA, and #6 WBC. He didn’t get dropped down in the rankings far like most fighters do when they get beaten in a fight as one-sided as he did against Canelo.
