The New How to Train Your Dragon Trailer Aims to Match the Magic of the Original

The best thing How to Train Your Dragon has going for it is our love of the original. It’s pretty rare you can go into a movie and know with a certain degree of certainty that the movie will be good. But here, that’s kind of the case. We’ve seen the animated film. We know the characters and story work. So, even adapting it into live-action, it would have to take a colossal screw-up to turn something that’s almost perfect into something bad.

A new trailer for the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon is now out and, from the looks of it, there are no major screw-ups in sight. Even if you hate movies like this you have to admit that director Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the original and directed both sequels, has done everything to recapture the magic of the original. The visuals, the music—it’s slightly different, but still feels like How to Train Your Dragon and that’s the most important thing.

Do you agree? Do you think this adaptation is going to, at the very least, not tarnish your memories and feelings of the originals? Later today, we’ll have much more on the film including quotes from DeBlois himself about some of the things you are thinking about right now. Why do the dragons looks the same? How different will it be from the original? And why are we doing this in the first place? Check back for that.

Starring Mason Thames, Gerard Butler, Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur, How to Train Your Dragon opens June 13. Tell us what you think of the trailer below.
