Around 20 people have been injured after a car drove into a group in the German city of Munich, police said.

The incident, which left at least two people seriously hurt, took place in the city’s central Stiglmaierplatz, where the trade union Verdi had been organising a protest.

Police said that they had detained the driver of the vehicle, a cream Mini Cooper, and that he no longer posed any threat to the public.

It was unclear if the incident was a deliberate attack or an accident.

A witness told the local broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk that he approached the car and tried to open one of the doors, but was unable to. “Then the police came and shot at the window,” the witness said.

The incident comes as senior officials from around the world prepare to gather in the city for the annual Munich Security Conference and just over a week before Germany holds federal elections on February 23.
