Liverpool v Newcastle: Line-ups, stats and preview

Liverpool continue their title charge against Newcastle on Wednesday after going 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League over the weekend.

The Premier League returning to Anfield now seems only a matter of time after the Reds beat Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad on Sunday, while Newcastle bolstered their top-four hopes with a 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest earlier in the day.

It has been an enthralling fixture in years gone by in the English top flight and the most recent meeting between the two was the latest installment of that, with the pair playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw at St James’ Park in December.

It is also a pre-cursor for the Carabao Cup which will play out at Wembley next month, with both sides wanting to land a blow ahead of battling for the first piece of silverware this season.

The Magpies have not won at Anfield since a 1-0 win in the League Cup in 1995, while you have to go back to 1994 to find the last time they triumphed in the Premier League away at Liverpool. The Reds have not beaten by the Toon at home in 28 games.

Prediction

After a shaky couple of weeks, Liverpool appeared to have the bit between their teeth again in the win over City and will head into this game with plenty of confidence.

Newcastle were well beaten by City the weekend prior to that but were excellent in the first half against Forest before falling off in the second half and they were fortunate to get the win. Liverpool should continue their good record against the Geordies here.
