TalkSPORT pundit makes on-air claim about new Rangers owners’ manager plans

A TalkSPORT pundit has provided his thoughts on what Rangers’ potential new owners could do about the managerial situation at Ibrox this summer.

Latest Rangers manager news

A new temporary era has got underway for the Gers, with former captain Barry Ferguson confirmed as the interim manager until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The hope is that the Scot can make a difference at Rangers, knowing the club so well and hopefully bringing a more positive feeling among the fanbase, following the unsurprising sacking of Philippe Clement last weekend.

While focus is now on Ferguson making an instant impact, it is vital that those high up at Ibrox are already focused on making the right permanent appointment come the summer.

Former scout Mick Brown has claimed that expected new investors 49ers Enterprises will be behind the decision, saying: “They’re going to want their man in charge because that helps smooth the whole process. Rangers will work with them to find the right man for the job, they’ll draft a shortlist and contact them to see whether they’re interested.”

Ex-Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner has emerged as an option for Rangers, having once guided the Terriers into the Premier League, while a reunion with title-winning former manager Steven Gerrard has also been mooted.

Deeney drops on-air Ferguson claim

Speaking to TalkSPORT [via Glasgow World], Troy Deeney talked up Ferguson’s chances of getting the Rangers job permanently for the next few years.

“Barry will be able to get a short-term spike, but I am a believer in you are who you are. He will change the training to very simplistic things. A bit of shape, a bit of fun, but what will happen over the course of time is those players will revert back to type and to what they are.

“I don’t mean this disrespectfully, they were really good against Manchester United (in the Europa League), but the reason they are losing to teams like St Mirren is because that is who you are. They are just not good enough at the moment. With the little change it will get a little spike. I think he is going in thinking ‘I’ve got an opportunity’. If things go well, with the new ownership, I could be here for three or four years.”

It is going to be fascinating to see how Ferguson fares at Rangers, with the 47-year-old likely to have the fans on his side from the off, having enjoyed such a memorable player career at the club, making 409 appearances and also winning six Scottish Premiership titles, five Scottish Cups and five Scottish League Cups.

Ultimately, though, he must impress if he is to come under genuine consideration by the club’s owners at the end of the campaign, especially as he hasn’t been a manager for three years, most recently being in charge of Alloa Athletic.
