Ruben Amorim to hold talks over furious substitution reaction

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has confirmed he plans to speak with Alejandro Garnacho over his reaction to being substituted in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town.

Garnacho was the unfortunate casualty after Patrick Dorgu’s red card late in the first half. The winger was hooked just moments before the interval and looked incredibly disappointed as he headed straight down the tunnel.

A chorus of boos roared around Old Trafford in response to Amorim’s decision to withdraw Garnacho, who was replaced by defender Noussair Mazraoui.

Amorim was asked about Garnacho’s reaction to the substitution and initially felt the question sought to compare the Argentine’s attitude to Marcus Rashford, who was shipped out on loan in January after failing to impress Amorim behind the scenes.

“You are making a connection with Rashford, right?” said Amorim. “I know, I know.

“What I’m saying is that I’m obviously going to talk with Garnacho about that. So I will probably talk about that if you want in the next press conference.”

The boss then looked to defend his decision to withdraw Garnacho and leave United’s attack centred around the struggling duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

“The thinking was we’d play more in the 5-3-1,” he explained. “I know that is a risk because you are taking maybe the only player who has one-against-one pace but I felt the team was okay in the controlling of the game, almost at half-time.

“Then you make the substitution. We have to choose someone to go out, we have to think about set -pieces also, so it was my choice.”
