In one of the biggest turnarounds of the season, California’s St. Augustine High School won the San Diego Section title after losing all 10 games in the regular season. The Saints made the playoffs despite going 0-10 this season and are now one win away from playing for the state title.
St. Augustine began the playoffs with a shutout win against the La Jolla Country Day High School. The Saints then carried that form into their next game against Holtville and took care of business, winning 10-6. Their next two wins came against San Diego and San Pasqual.
Maxpreps’ Instagram account shared a post about the Saints’ run and fans were quick to express their reactions to the post.
Most fans likened the Saints’ turnaround to a movie and called for OTT platforms to make a series about the program’s great run.
“This needs a Netflix series,” one fan said.
“just gotta win when it matters,” another fan commented.
“we just figured it out,” another fan wrote.
Some fans were shocked to see a 0-10 team play in the playoffs. They expressed their confusion in the comments section.
“How’d they MAKE playoffs?” one fan wrote.
“How do you even get a shot after going 0-10?!” another fan said.
“How do you even get into the playoffs…..” another fan commented.
The Saints’ defense has been phenomenal in their improbable playoff run thus far. They haven’t allowed more than 20 points in any of their four wins and have won three games by holding their opponents to below 10 points.
The Saints will play the SPXSMA Warriors in their next game on Saturday. The Warriors have also had a similar journey. They were 1-9 in the regular season but have won four straight playoff games.
SPXSMA’s coach, Devah Thomas, talks about St. Augustine and his team’s incredible winning streak
St. Augustine High School is set to take on the SPXSMA Warriors in the Division 4-A regional bowl game. Both these teams are on a four-game winning streak after ending the regular season with a record of 0-10 and 1-9 respectively.
Warriors head coach Devah Thomas spoke about the teams’ surprising run ahead of the game.
“We’re both 4-0,” Thomas said, as per Los Angeles Times. “Competitive equity. Google it and take advantage of it.”
The game is scheduled for Saturday at 6 PM. The Warriors will play host to the Saints in that game.
