Terence Crawford says he’s not “chasing” Canelo Alvarez, as many people believe that this is the reason he’s been campaigning for that fight. The four-division world champion Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) states he sees Canelo as the “most accomplished fighter” next to himself and would like to face him.
Not Chasing, Challenging
Crawford should be pushing for that fight because it would allow the two top North American fighters to battle it out in a match that could create interest, make money, and entertain the public.
Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) has routinely disappointed fans in the last two years since his loss to Dmitry Bivol. People would like to see the Mexican star take an interesting fight against someone they want to see him battle. Canelo didn’t want to face David Benavidez or David Morrell when they were both at 168.
Has Canelo Lost His Nerve?
Those fights would have kept Alvarez at the top, facing the best, but he’s slacked off and shown no desire to test himself. You could say that Canelo has lost his nerve and is showing fear by choosing not to take on the challenges that he once did.
The 37-year-old Crawford would be a smaller risk for Canelo compared to Benavidez or Morrell due to his lack of size, power, and age. Still, it’s an excellent fight that Americans and Mexican fans want.
“I wouldn’t say I’m chasing Canelo. I think that’s a broad statement. I just want the opportunity to fight the best fighter in my generation that’s out there,” said Terence Crawford to Boxing Social about why he wants to fight Canelo Alvarez.
“He’s the most accomplished fighter in today’s sport of boxing, other than myself. I’d just like to fight another great. That’s it, that’s all. If the fight happens, I think it would be the biggest fight in the sport of boxing today,” said Crawford about his rationale for wanting to challenge Canelo.
