India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out in an unfortunate way during Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Jaiswal’s wicket came against the run of play when Indian batters were dominating the proceedings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed during the dying stages of the day. Jaiswal punched a full ball on off stump towards mid-on where Pat Cummins was stationed. He immediately set off after hitting the ball but Kohli was ball-watching and didn’t even look at his partner.
Jaiswal hared towards the non-striker’s end and there was no way of him coming back at the striker’s end. Both Kohli and Jaiswal were standing at one end as Cummins picked up the ball neatly and threw it towards the wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who disturbed the stumps.

Both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli were left shellshocked after the incident that rocked the Indian dressing room and the Indian crowd in attendance. While Jaiswal seemed to be suggesting that it was his call, Kohli defended himself by saying that the ball was too close to run.
It was a high-risk single but Kohli made a basic mistake by not looking at his partner and instead looking at the ball. He hardly left his crease and by the time he could understand anything, Jaiswal was already standing along side him at the non-striker’s end.
End of a brilliant partnership
The horrific run out broke a terrific partnership of 102 runs between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli as they bailed India out of early trouble. Kohli joined Jaiswal when India had just lost KL Rahul and were 51-2.
Both the batters soaked in the pressure brilliantly and started rebuilding the innings. As both of them got set, they started playing shots according to the merit of the ball.
While Jaiswal was more audacious with his strokeplay, Kohli took his time but looked assured at the crease. The batters looked good to end the day on a high for India before Jaiswal’s wicket started India’s collapse.
Yashasvi Jaiswal smashes a brilliant half-century
Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a brilliant 82 off 118 balls, which included 11 fours and 1 six. He looked gutted at his dismissal while Virat Kohli too didn’t look happy.
Jaiswal’s wicket seemed to have broken Kohli’s concentration as well. The 36-year-old, who had left the ball perfectly till that point, went chasing for a wide delivery from Scott Boland and was sent back to the pavilion.
Virat Kohli’s wicket was huge given the context of the game as Australia sensed an oppportunity to run through India’s batting order. Kohli was out for 36 off 86 balls in a knock where he looked quite assured at the crease. Night-watchman Akash Deep was also dismissed later in the day for a duck.
