Irfan Pathan Criticizes Australian Media for “Clown Kohli” Controversy

Former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan has openly criticized the Australian media for their derogatory portrayal of Virat Kohli. Speaking on Star Sports, Pathan expressed his disapproval over the “Clown Kohli” headline, which followed a heated incident between Kohli and Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Pathan minced no words in labelling the Australian media’s approach as hypocritical. “First thing, Australian media is crossing limits of double standards,” he said firmly. “First, they make you the king, and then they show aggression by calling you a joker.”

Using Popularity for Profit?

The former India all-rounder also questioned the media’s intent behind such narratives. He accused them of exploiting Kohli’s global popularity for commercial gain. “You are using the popularity of the cricketer to make money. That way heads and tails both are yours, which is not acceptable to any of us ex-cricketers, especially Indians,” Pathan remarked.

This sentiment resonates strongly with Indian fans who have taken to social media to call out what they see as a targeted campaign against their star batter.

Pathan didn’t stop at pointing out current inconsistencies. He brought up past instances of Australian players’ questionable behaviour that were downplayed or overlooked. “What Virat Kohli has done is wrong, no doubt about it, but ICC decides the quantum of punishment,” he clarified. “Australian media are making a big fuss about it but forget what their players did in the past, who spat on Ramnaresh Sarwan and cussed his family.”

Support from Sunil Gavaskar

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar also joined the discussion, backing Pathan’s sentiments. Gavaskar took a swipe at the Australian media, accusing them of playing the “12th man” for their team. He emphasized their selective criticism, pointing out how they conveniently ignore their players’ misconduct while vilifying opponents.

Humiliated in Headlines: Virat Kohli Tagged ‘Crybaby’ by Australian Media Post Controversial Incident

The controversy began on Day 1 of the fourth Test when Kohli collided with Konstas during the 10th over. The verbal exchange that followed led the ICC to impose a fine of 20% of Kohli’s match fee along with a demerit point. While Kohli accepted the penalty, Australian media’s exaggerated response, including the “Clown Kohli” headline, has sparked outrage.

Indian cricket enthusiasts have been vocal in their support for Kohli. Many see the Australian media’s portrayal as a calculated ploy to deflect attention from their team’s flaws. Social media has been flooded with posts criticizing the “double standards” highlighted by Pathan and Gavaskar.
