Tank Davis’s Blinding Speed, But Against Who?

Gervonta Davis showed off his blinding hand speed today, working out with his trainer, Barry Hunter, on the mitts, preparing for the title defense of his WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach on March 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Mitts Master

Davis looks great on mitts, but it’s overkill because his opponent, super featherweight Roach, has no power and is overmatched in this fight. It would be nice if Tank were working out like a dog and fighting someone with actual talent. Then you get interested in watching him hit the mitts, but not when it’s yet another cherry-pick like all the rest during Davis’ carefully managed 12-year pro career.

Tank Davis’ Last Seven Opponents

– Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
– Isaac Cruz
– Mario Barrios
– Leo Santa Cruz

That’s a mediocre bunch right there, and none of them are relevant fighters at lightweight, not one. So, it’s great that Tank Davis is outstanding at hitting mitts, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing marginal opposition on PPV for $75. Those types of fights should be on for free because those are matches intended to be mismatched.

Tank’s form looked a lot like Floyd Mayweather Jr, his former promoter, in his mitt workouts. But the two of them couldn’t be further apart in fighting style. Thankfully, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is a lot more entertaining to watch than Floyd Jr. was.

Still, Tank is VERY much like Mayweather with his cherry picking in addition to his mitt workouts. Floyd was the best at picking them and veering away from the dangerous predators during his career. Now, Tank is following his safety-first blueprint.

Where’s The Challenge?

Fans want to see Tank knockout Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting the opposition that has a chance of beating him. Davis or his management has mostly always chosen fighters where he was a massive favorite.
