Arsenal see £60m bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins rejected

Arsenal have made an audacious attempt to sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as the transfer deadline approaches.

Mikel Arteta, a long-time admirer of the England international, has pushed the club to act on their interest in the 29-year-old forward with the Gunners lacking a fit and traditional striker.

Reports say that Arsenal’s initial bid – believed to be around £60million – for Watkins has been turned down, but they are expected to return with an improved offer in an effort to secure his services before February 3.

With three years remaining on his contract at Villa Park, Watkins remains an integral part of Unai Emery’s squad.

However, the prospect of a move to the Emirates could appeal to the striker, who has previously spoken about his admiration for Arsenal and would immediately be challenging to win the Premier League title.

While at Brentford in 2020, Watkins said: “That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a long shot.”

The North London club are eager to strengthen their attacking options in the January window as they aim to challenge Liverpool for the title

Despite Arsenal’s strong interest, Villa are in a secure position due to Watkins’ current contract, making any potential transfer a significant challenge.

Whether the Gunners can strike a deal remains to be seen.

This season, Watkins has netted 10 goals in 31 appearances for Villa, including one in their recent 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Villa are also in negotiations with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr to sell highly-rated goalscorer Jhon Duran.

The Midlands club are believed to value him at around £80m.
