Postecoglou breathes sigh of relief after breaking losing run

Tottenham ended their run of four consecutive Premier League defeats with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The first half saw both sides trading chances, but it was Tottenham who broke the deadlock in the 29th minute.

Heung-Min Son’s inswinging corner from the left caused chaos in the Brentford box, and Vitaly Janelt inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Despite creating plenty of chances in the first half, Brentford couldn’t find a breakthrough. Tottenham, with less threat in front of goal, went into the break with the lead.

Brentford came out strong in the second half, pushing for an equaliser. In the 53rd minute, Keane Lewis-Potter crossed perfectly for Yoane Wissa, but the Brentford striker sent his effort over the bar from six yards out.

Moments later, Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky made a crucial save from Christian Norgaard’s first-time shot, keeping the visitors in front.

Tottenham’s resilience in defence was key, with Djed Spence making a vital clearance off the line in the 86th minute to deny Brentford an equaliser.

As the hosts threw men forward in search of a late goal, Tottenham capitalised on the counter-attack.

In the 87th minute, captain Son threaded a through ball to Pape Sarr, who coolly finished through the legs of Brentford’s goalkeeper Valdimarsson to seal the win.

The victory sees Tottenham move within two points of Manchester United, who suffered a defeat to Crystal Palace.

For Ange Postecoglou’s side, this result provides a much-needed boost ahead of their Carabao Cup second-leg clash against Liverpool in midweek.

Brentford, despite their attacking intent and numerous chances, were left frustrated by a lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

Thomas Frank’s side will rue missed opportunities, especially Wissa’s golden chance early in the second half. The Bees remain winless in their last five league outings.
