Tottenham transfer from Lens ‘a dream’… as defender targets two trophies

Kevin Danso has called the chance to win trophies “every kid’s dream” after joining Tottenham on loan from Ligue 1 side Lens for the rest of the season with an obligation for a £21 million transfer.

Austria international Danso is expected to sign a five-year contract at the end of his initial spell after Spurs stepped in ahead of Wolves, who had a medical lined up for the 26-year-old.

“It feels amazing to be here,” Danso told Spurs’ website. “I’ve always wanted to play for a big club in the Premier League and Tottenham Hotspur is exactly that.

“As soon as you hear [they] are interested, the only thing you can do is say yes. It’s an amazing project to be part of and I’m happy to be here.”

Kevin Danso: ‘I love to defend’

Danso is set to make his first Premier League appearance in more than five years, having barely featured for Southampton during a season-long loan from German club Augsburg during the 2019/20 campaign.

The Austria-born centre-back moved to Milton Keynes at the age of six and spent time with Reading and MK Dons as a youth player before joining Augsburg.

He was eligible to play for Ghana through his parents but made his Austria debut in 2017 and was named in their squad for Euro 2024.

“I’m a quick, powerful centre-back and good on the ball,” said Danso. “I thrive in one-v-one defending situations – that’s what I love to do, defend.

“It’s a dream come true. Opportunities to win trophies are every kid’s dream and I hope we can win a couple.”

Tottenham: Trophy chances for Danso?

Despite a difficult Premier League season that has left Spurs seven points off the top half of the table, they remain in contention in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League.

Following a 2-0 win at Brentford in the top flight on Sunday, Tottenham head to Liverpool with a 1-0 lead for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final at Anfield on Thursday, when Danso could debut. Their last major trophy came when they won the competition in 2007/08.

Manager Ange Postecoglou, whose latest defensive absentee in an injury-hit season is Radu Dragusin, told Sky Sports that he expects Danso to “be a great fit”.

“We’re a bit short at the back and have been for a while,” Postecoglou acknowledged. “He’s experienced, a good one-on-one defender and new players give us energy. We’re looking forward to him being part of the group.”
