Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has admitted that “apologising is not enough” in an emotional address to fans at the end of 2024.
Amad enjoyed his first consistent run in the United lineup towards the back end of the calendar year after previously struggling to stake his claim, racking up ten goals and assists in the last two months.
But those promising individual displays have come against a backdrop of team struggles. United lost five times in December alone and conceded 18 goals to match an unwanted club record.
The form that United are in even led new head coach Ruben Amorim, whose honeymoon period was limited to just two games before stark reality set in, to acknowledge the R-word: relegation.
On New Year’s Eve, the day after a meek performance in the home defeat to Newcastle United, Amad addressed his 600,000 followers on X, formerly Twitter.
“A very difficult year, apologising is not enough,” he said, directly to fans.
“…but you have supported us and continued to do so throughout all this time…thank you.”
Amorim is trying to implement new methods and a whole new tactical system midway through a season in which nearly every week is a three-game week, meaning the opportunity to actually work through things in training is virtually non-existent.
Things aren’t about to get any easier either, with a short trip along the M62 to Liverpool to face the league leaders on Sunday. The reverse meeting at Old Trafford in September finished in chastening 3-0 defeat, while it was only two years ago that United were annihilated 7-0 at Anfield.
