Unbeaten Avious Griffin stopping Jose ‘El Guero’ Luis Sanchez in the eighth round for the vacant WBC USA Welterweight title on Thursday night at the Sony Hall, New York.
In the main event, welterweight Griffin, 17-0 (16), stopped Sanchez, 14-5-1 (4), at 2:46 of the eighth round of a scheduled 10 rounds for the vacant WBC USA Welterweight title.
In the first round midway point, Griffin landed a left hook after a right on the chin and down went Sanchez for an 8-count from Referee Shawn Clark. He was able to get to the bell by mainly covering up. In the second round midway point, Griffin dropped Sanchez with a right on the chin for an 8-count from Referee Joe Antume. In the final seconds, Griffin landed a right on the chin, dropping Sanchez for a third time for another 8-count from Referee Antume. Griffin also drew blood from the nose of Sanchez.
In the third round, Griffin continued dominating a game against Sanchez. In the fourth round, Griffin was outworking Sanchez for the most part. Halfway through the round, Griffin drove Sanchez into the ropes with a combination. With a minute remaining, Griffin complained after a clash of heads. In the final seconds it was Sanchez landing the final punch a right on the chin of Griffin.
In the fifth round, Griffin kept outworking Sanchez, who did his best to keep up the pace with him. In the final twenty seconds, Sanchez landed his best punch of the fight, a right to Griffin’s body. In the sixth round, Sanchez came back well, if not enough to win the round. In the final seconds, Sanchez slipped to the canvas. This may have been his best round so far. Before the next round, the ring physician examined Sanchez.
In the seventh round, in the final seconds, Griffin rocked Sanchez with a right to the chin. In the eighth round, Griffin continued taking it to Sanchez, having him hurt, when Referee Clark stepped in, waving it off.
Junior Welterweight Jason ‘The Joker’ Castanon, 2-1 (1), won a majority decision over Stephen Barbee, 0-3) over four close rounds.
In the first round, former MMA boxer Barbee, who has former world IBF Lightweight champion Paul ‘The Pittsburgh Kid’ Spadafora in his corner as his trainer opened up halfway into the round after he and the taller Castanon were mostly jabbing one another.
In the second round, there was little to choose between both fighters. Before the third round, Barbee had his gloves examined because the tape was loose. In the third round, there were too many clinches, keeping Referee Joe Antume busy. Castanon had a cut on his fight eyebrow due to a clash of heads at the end of the round.
Castanon did enough against the aggressive Barbee in the fourth and final round to take the round with a flurry in the final minute.
Scores 38-38, 39-37 and 39-37.
Previously unbeaten Junior Welterweight southpaw ‘King’ Koby Khalil Williams, 4-1 (3), lost by a majority decision to southpaw Nick ‘The Truth’ Isaac, 6-0 (4), over six rounds.
In the first round, the scheduled six rounds were increased from four due to two fights on the card falling through. Both southpaws boxed one another well, with Isaac having a little bit of an edge, landing a bit more against the taller Williams. In the second round, Isaac out-landed Williams mostly with an effective jab, with Williams on the receiving end.
In the third round, like the previous round, Isaac was still the busier of the two. In the fourth round, Williams had some swelling under his right eye from Isaac’s jab. Like the previous rounds, Isaac outworked Williams, continuing to take another round.
In the fifth round, both started more than the previously scheduled four. Both needed to step it up, and did so midway, opening up on one another. In the sixth and final round, Isaac dominated the round, looking like the winner.
The scores were 60-54 by all three judges.
