Details On The Tragic Passing Of A Southern University Student
Members of Omega Psi Phi reportedly held a ritual where pledges stood in line when Caleb Wilson suddenly collapsed. A group of friends rushed him to Baton Rouge General Hospital on Bluebonnet Boulevard early Thursday, Feb. 27, but he remained unresponsive.
Hospital staff declared Wilson deceased and contacted Baton Rouge Police at 3:15 a.m., launching a death investigation. Authorities haven’t confirmed whether hazing played a role, and an autopsy is still pending to determine his cause of death.
Fox8Live notes that Caleb Wilson, a junior at Southern University from New Orleans, Louisiana, majored in mechanical engineering. He was known for his musical talent, playing in the college’s renowned Human JukeBox marching band.
Sheriff’s Office Offers Condolences After Caleb’s Death
Per WDFU, Caleb’s father, Corey Wilson, had served as a deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office for many years. In light of this, the JPSO shared a statement offering condolences to Corey and his family. The department also expressed their support for Corey and his loved ones during this challenging time.
“On behalf of Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to Deputy Corey Wilson and his family following the heartbreaking loss of his son Caleb. Dep. Wilson retired last year as a sergeant after serving 35 years with the JPSO. Dep. Wilson’s commitment to public service has continued with him currently serving in a part-time capacity. The JPSO stands in support of Dep. Wilson and his family. We ask that their privacy be respected as they mourn this unimaginable loss.”
Southern University Marching Band Releases Statement About Caleb’s Passing
After news broke about Caleb Wilson’s passing, the Southern University Marching Band shared an official statement on Facebook. They paid tribute to Caleb with a heartfelt message and several photos, including moments from his time in the band. The university recognized his dedication to both academics and music, highlighting his passion. They also sent prayers and condolences to his family and friends, expressing how much he will be missed.
The Southern University Division of Student Affairs also addressed the situation, announcing an indefinite suspension of all membership activities on campus, including fraternities, sororities, and student clubs. They added that the pause will remain in effect until further notice.
