David Moyes returns to Everton as head coach following Sean Dyche’s dismissal

David Moyes has been reappointed as manager of Everton, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Everton, currently in 16th place in the Premier League, find themselves embroiled in a relegation battle with only three victories from 19 matches this season.

The ex-West Ham boss will take over from Sean Dyche, who was dismissed following the Friedkin Group’s takeover.

“I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club,” Moyes said in a statement.

“Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team.”

Moyes previously managed Everton from 2002 to 2013, guiding the club to some of their best top-flight moments.

Following a successful spell at Preston, Moyes took charge of Everton in March 2002, inheriting a team facing the threat of relegation, similar to the side he has now.

He quickly stabilised things, leading them to numerous top-eight finishes in the Premier League.

During his time at Goodison Park, Moyes guided Everton to the FA Cup final in 2009 and secured a fourth-placed finish in the 2004-05 season, qualifying them for the Champions League.

He also played a crucial role in the development of young talent, giving Wayne Rooney his professional debut and signing key players such as Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini.

Moyes’ managerial career since leaving Everton has seen a mix of successes and challenges.

He succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United but struggled to replicate his predecessor’s success, being dismissed after less than a year in charge.

Subsequent managerial roles at Real Sociedad, Sunderland, and West Ham have yielded varying results.

He achieved notable success with West Ham, guiding them to two top-seven finishes and securing their first major trophy in 43 years by winning the Europa Conference League in 2023.
