‘Emotional’ Man United defender aims to ‘enjoy football again’ in PSV loan

Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia says his aim is to “stay healthy” after making a “quick choice” to join Eredivisie leaders PSV on loan.

The 25-year-old has joined the Dutch Eredivisie leaders until the end of the season, having come off at half-time in both of the Premier League games he has started this season following 17 months out injured.

“If you are out for a year and a half, you really miss it,” Malacia told PSV’s website. “[PSV] can expect energy from me and I always play with a smile on my face, which is important.

“Everything went very quickly and I had to quickly make a choice. I am an emotional person and my feeling was good at that moment.”

Tyrell Malacia transfer: PSV loan deal

Malacia was former United manager Erik ten Hag’s first signing for £13 million from Feyenoord on a four-year deal in July 2022.

He returned on November 28 following two knee operations, making the first of four appearances in this season’s Europa League.

“I’ve come off a long injury and just want to play minutes again,” said the Feyenoord youth product. “You become more of an adult and get to know the things you need for your body and the things you don’t. [I want to] stay healthy, play a lot of minutes and enjoy football again.”

While United are languishing in 13th in England, defending champions PSV are two points clear in the Netherlands, although second-placed Ajax have a game in hand.

PSV table, fixtures, results

Peter Bosz’s side have the third-best defensive record in the Dutch top flight but have scored 25 more league goals than any other Eredivisie team.

After beginning the league season with 14 wins and one defeat, they have lost two and drawn one of their last five games, including dropping points at home for the first time.

PSV host Feyenoord in the quarter-finals of the Dutch Cup on Wednesday (5.45pm GMT) and meet Juventus in the Champions League knockout phase play-offs to reach the round of 16, with the first leg on November 11 and the second eight days later (both 8pm).

Malacia, who has played nine minutes of league football since December 22, could make his debut when PSV host 13th-placed Willem II in the Eredivisie on Saturday (5.45pm).
