Gwen Stacy’s Resurrection Just Got Even Weirder

As we learned last week, in a most striking move writer Cavan Scott (Star Wars: The High Republic) and artist Stefano Nesi are bringing Gwen Stacy back from the grave. Yes, Peter Parker’s Gwen Stacy, whose tragic death echoes through all of comic book-dom.

However, the heartbreak lingering from that first neck-breaking moment to today gets a bit of a respite in the most unconventional way when Stacy comes back as a bloodthirsty killing machine with Deadpool’s Weapon X abilities. And from Marvel’s tease and release of variant covers we’re quite excited for the mayhem this will cause in the lives of not just Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, but also the life of one Gwendolyne Poole, the original Gwenpool.

That’s right, this isn’t a straight up character reboot—not if Gwenpool has anything to say about it. And we’re sure she will have something to say about it, as the self-aware Deadpool variant grapples with the doppelgänger hijinks. Gwendolyn Poole will be dealing with the ramifications of the Gwenpool mantle being used in two places at once, while also helping Peter with some emotional support in handling Stacy’s return. It’s gonna be a lot and we’re here for the drama.

Scott told Marvel about the release, “What an absolute honor! To tear both Gwenpool AND Spider-Man’s worlds apart? Yes please! Gwen Stacy is back from the grave and deadlier than ever. Weapon-X style abilities? Check. A line in killer put-downs? You’ve got it.”

He continued to describe the bold storyline that’s raising a lot of questions. “This is NOT the Gwen you remember. But just who is behind her miraculous resurrection? And what has happened to the original Gwenpool’s usually careful existence? Add Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark to the mix and you have the Marvel series of my dreams!”

The Spider-Verse is always expanding, and with this addition to the lore fans will get to experience Gwen Stacy in a haunting new way. We’re curious if this is going too far; Marvel just won’t let a lot of its characters stay dead, instead baiting fans to come back to a redux of a popular storyline with a different outcome. This arc definitely has been gaining viral buzz as questions abound about how exactly Stacy comes back.
