‘If I knew I would change it’

Ruben Amorim admitted he is struggling to identify why he has not made a consistent impact during his Manchester United tenure after his side again looked far from convincing as they came from behind to salvage a point against Everton.

United came from two goals down to rescue a draw at Goodison Park through second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte after Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure had given the Toffees a deserved lead.

A dramatic ending to the game saw a resurgent Everton denied a penalty in stoppage time by VAR, much to the dismay of boss David Moyes.

The result is unlikely to please either manager. For Moyes it will feel like two points dropped, while for Amorim, despite a much-improved performance after the break, the scoreline will do little to alleviate the mounting pressure on the Portuguese coach.

United have won just four of the 15 league games since Amorim took charge in November, and he admitted he was finding it difficult to pinpoint the reason for his team’s stuttering form.

“I don’t know. If I knew I would change it,” said Amorim.

“We have to continue to think to the next game and everything we do during the week we have to use it in the game. And if we do that we are near to winning games like we did in the second half today. If we do not, we are not going to to win.”

The Red Devils boss also said his team “did not exist” in the first-half against Everton but was quick to highlight their improved showing after the break.

Amorim added: “We didn’t exist in the first half. We know this team [Everton] are really good on second balls and we suffered two goals like this, on second balls. We were soft during the first half but we managed to recover.

“I do not want to say just the negative parts. The second half was so much better. In the end, we were near to winning the game.

“In this moment we have to focus day by day. We need to survive this season, that is clear, and then to think ahead.”

Next up for United is the visit of struggling Ipswich Town on Wednesday. The Tractor Boys are currently under the stewardship of Kieran McKenna, formerly on the coaching staff at Old Trafford.
