Shubman Gill hits brilliant fifty in 2nd ODI

Gill continued his batting brilliance in Cuttack after his incredible match-winning knock in the ODI series opener in Nagpur.

While opening the innings with Rohit Sharma, Gill played cautious cricket. The youngster had no problem playing second-fiddle to his skipper and made sure to provide him with the support whenever needed.

Shubman Gill looked settled in the middle from the very start and he looked set for a big score. Despite not playing high-risk cricket, Gill completed his fifty off just 45 balls.

His innings was eventually brought to an end by Jamie Overton in the 17th over. The pacer came up with an excellent off-stump yorker, which took Gill by surprise. The Indian batter was very late in bringing his bat down and his off-stump was uprooted.

Shubman Gill walked back to the dugout after scoring 60 runs off 52 balls. His innings consisted of 60 runs off 52 balls, with 9 fours and 1 six.

It looked like a pretty good surface – Ben Duckett

Speaking during the mid-innings break, the English opener Ben Duckett stated that the pitch was a good one and was curious to see its nature as the game progressed. He said:

“It looked like a pretty good surface. I think even at the start and towards the end, the odd ball kept low. With dew setting in later in the day, it would be interesting to see whether the pitch settles down or it spins and makes it worse for batting.”

Ben Duckett added that he enjoys batting with Phil Salt as the latter plays attacking cricket from the very start. He stated:

“(On opening partnership with Phil Salt) It is great, most of the time it feels like I am the second fiddle in the partnership. He will get us off to a flyer. We are early and learning. He was smart, he saw I was finding it easy so he just kept putting me back on strike.”

While talking about England’s total of 304 runs, he said that they managed to put up a good score and needed little help from the surface to win the match. He stated:

“(On what’s a decent total on this surface) No, I think when you get 300, it is always a good total. It is pretty quick scoring here. As I said, hopefully the pitch turns more and becomes difficult to bat later in the night.”
