Jasprit Bumrah to Captain India in Sydney Test as Rohit Sharma Opts to Rest

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has reportedly opted out of the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jasprit Bumrah is likely to replace Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian team in Sydney. Bumrah is currently the vice-captain of the Indian team and led the team to victory during the First Test in Perth.

A Big Decision from the Skipper

The Indian Express revealed that Rohit informed head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar about his decision to rest. Both parties, it seems, have given their nod of approval. Speculation is rife that this could mark Rohit’s final Test appearance for India, with the next World Test Championship cycle beginning in England later this year.

Rohit Sharma’s recent form in Test cricket has raised serious concerns. Over his last nine matches, he has averaged just 10.93, including a dismal 6.2 in his performances in Australia. Compounding the pressure is his captaincy, which has come under heavy scrutiny following consecutive losses to Australia and a shocking home whitewash by New Zealand.

Changes in the Playing XI

With Rohit stepping aside, India’s playing XI will see significant changes. Shubman Gill, who missed the Melbourne Test, is set to return at number three. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the innings. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant retains his spot behind the stumps. Prasidh Krishna, on the other hand, replaces the injured Akash Deep.

On the eve of the match, Gambhir was spotted deep in conversation with Bumrah. While Rohit’s brief practice session did little to dispel rumours, Gambhir chose to remain tight-lipped, stating only, “Everything is fine with Rohit. We’ll announce the XI tomorrow.”

Sydney Showdown: What’s at Stake?

This Test carries immense significance. India must win to level the series 2-2 and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah, known for his calm leadership, has another chance to showcase his mettle. For Rohit, this break could signal the end of an era in the longest format.

The team’s composition reflects a blend of youth and experience. With Gambhir at the helm and Bumrah leading on the field, fans hope for a strong comeback to finish the series on a high note.
