Australia’s backup batter and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis has been ruled out with a mild calf strain. He picked up the injury while fielding during the fourth Test at the MCG, which means he’ll miss the final Test against India in Sydney. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the news and said they’ll manage Inglis’s recovery carefully with an eye on the upcoming Test tour of Sri Lanka.
Inglis was Australia’s only spare batter in the squad on day three after allrounder Beau Webster was released for Big Bash League (BBL) duties. Sharing sub-fielding responsibilities with Sean Abbott, Inglis picked up the strain. CA announced his official release from the squad, although he was unlikely to play in Sydney barring an injury to the playing XI.
Inglis’ BBL Participation in Jeopardy
The injury is a significant setback for Perth Scorchers, Inglis’ BBL team. He had already featured in two matches against the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades, played between the third and fourth Tests. However, with just 22 days to recover before Australia’s Test squad departs for the UAE pre-tour camp, his immediate availability for the BBL remains doubtful.
CA’s priority is ensuring Inglis is fit for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka, starting January 29. Given his skill against spin, Inglis is a strong candidate to make his Test debut as a specialist batter in Galle. His recovery timeline will be closely monitored to maximise his readiness.

Replacement Announcement Pending
CA is yet to announce a replacement batter for the Sydney Test. Nathan McSweeney could return to the squad due to his versatility, despite being dropped ahead of the Boxing Day Test. Webster, though released for the BBL, remains on standby and available if required.
Australia’s fast-bowling reserves remain strong with Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott staying with the squad. Concerns over Mitchell Starc’s back discomfort during day three were alleviated after the pacer declared himself fit to bowl. However, he wasn’t needed as Australia wrapped up India’s first innings swiftly.
