Liam Dawson’s exceptional catch leaves Quinton de Kock astonished in SA20 2025 match

Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) all-rounder Liam Dawson delivered a spectacular fielding performance against Durban Super Giants (DSG) in the 14th match of the SA20 2025 season. Liam Dawson completed a stunning one-handed catch to send JJ Smuts back to the dugout, leaving fans and players in awe.

Durban Super Giants skipper Keshav Maharaj won the toss and chose to bat first at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Sunday, January 19. However, their batting lineup struggled early as Sunrisers Eastern Cape pacers Marco Jansen and Richard Gleeson ran through the top order, reducing them to 18/4.

The fourth wicket was JJ Smuts, and the credit for it goes to fielder Liam Dawson. The moment in the match came during the 6th over of Durban’s innings. Richard Gleeson bowled a full delivery around the off-stump line. Smuts committed to an off-drive but attempted to adjust his shot, leading to a mishit.

The ball appeared to be heading for the boundary, but Dawson dived to his right-hand side and made an extraordinary grab. The catch left Smuts stunned and even amazed Quinton de Kock, who could hardly believe his eyes from the dressing room. It was one of the finest catches of the tournament.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape Chased Down Target Comfortably in 15.2 Overs

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape bowlers, led by Marco Jansen and Richard Gleeson, dismissed the Durban Super Giants for a modest 115/8 in their 20 overs. Kane Williamson’s patient 44 was the only significant contribution from the Super Giants, while Naveen-ul-Haq added a quickfire 30 off 15 balls.

In response, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape comfortably chased down the target in 15.2 overs. David Bedingham scored an explosive 39 off 20 balls, and Aiden Markram added 31 off 20, guiding them to victory. With the win, SEC earned bonus points and moved to fourth place with 10 points from 5 matches.

A Good Start Allowed Us to Secure the Bonus Point – Aiden Markram

Sunrisers captain Aiden Markram said that the atmosphere from the home fans was electrifying. He highlighted that a strong start in the powerplay allowed his team to secure the bonus point. Markram also admitted that they didn’t expect the wicket to play as it did, with more bounce than anticipated.

“Said it at the toss as well that it (atmosphere from the home fans) was really pumping. Initially you don’t pay too much attention to it. We wanted a good powerplay and fortunately the good start allowed to get the bonus point, didn’t have to search for it too much. To be honest didn’t expect the wicket to play this way. Had more bounce than we expected. We bowled hard length really well and got the rewards,” Aiden Markram said.
