Lionel Messi fined for clash with New York assistant coach Ballouchy

Lionel Messi has been fined an undisclosed amount after grabbing the neck of an opposing coach at the weekend.

The Inter Miami star became embroiled in a conversation with New York City assistant coach Mehdi Ballouchy after the clash in Fort Lauderdale.

It seemed fairly amiable at the outset but, having initially walked away, Messi then turned round and squeezed the back of Ballouchy’s neck and seemingly gestured for the pair to meet up inside.

An MLS statement last night confirmed his sanction. It read: “The MLS Disciplinary Committee has fined Inter Miami CF forward Lionel Messi an undisclosed amount for violating the hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent policy following the conclusion of Inter Miami’s match against New York City FC on February 22.”

Suarez also punished

Messi’s team-mate Luis Suarez received the same sanction following a confrontation with NYC defender Birk Risa at half-time.

Argentina captain Messi cut a frustrated figure following the 2-2 draw in his side’s MLS opener.

Miami had Toto Aviles sent off in the first half and Messi confronted referee Rosendo Mendoza at the final whistle, aggressively pursuing him and pointing in his face before being shown the yellow card.
