Man City could step up efforts to sign “world class” £313k-p/w star for Pep

Manchester City could step up their efforts to sign a “world class” midfielder for Pep Guardiola this summer, according to a report.

Man City set for major overhaul

Man City’s major drop-off this season has become a real cause for concern for Guardiola, as indicated by the fact he chose to spend big in the January transfer window.

The Sky Blues brought in Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush this winter, having been keen to bolster their squad in a number of areas, but the spending spree may not stop there.

The reigning Premier League champions continue to be linked with a number of players ahead of the summer, with Juventus left-back Andrea Cambiaso still believed to be of interest.

The Blues are still seeking reinforcements…

Despite the arrival of Gonzalez, City also remain interested in a new midfielder, and they have been named as one of the clubs battling to sign Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Larsson, who is valued at a hefty £51m.

However, there may also be a possibility to sign a midfielder on a free transfer this summer, with reports from Spain revealing Man City could step up their efforts to sign Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich.

Guardiola is well-aware of Kimmich’s ability from his time as Bayern manager, and he is said to value the German’s tactical ability and experience.

The Sky Blues are set to continue monitoring the midfielder’s contract situation ahead of the summer, with his £313k-per-week deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Kimmich could be a “world class” addition for City

The 30-year-old, who has spent his entire professional career in Germany, has proven himself at both central midfield and right-back during his time with Bayern, receiving praise from Julian Nagelsmann for the way in which he has mastered two positions.

Rodri’s absence has highlighted City’s need to bring in additional depth in midfield this summer, considering the major downturn in form, and there are signs the Germany international would be able to slot right into the middle of the park.

In many ways, the former RB Leipzig is a very similar player to Rodri, given his ability in possession of the ball, ranking in the 99th percentile for passes attempted per 90 over the past year, while he also ranks in the 95th percentile for assists.

Kimmich could be an excellent signing for City, but it may be difficult to tempt him into a move if they miss out on the Champions League, and there is a real chance of that happening if their form doesn’t improve soon, with some tricky games coming up.
