Manchester City thrash Salford while Leeds narrowly avoid cup upset

Manchester City cruised into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup after a commanding 8-0 victory over League Two Salford City at the Etihad.

Salford-born James McAtee bagged a first senior hat-trick as City side avoided a huge cup upset with a ruthless performance that will be a welcome confidence boost for Pep Guardiola and his players.

The excellent Jeremy Doku scored a brace, while Jack Grealish, Nico O’Reilly and debutant Divin Mubama completed the rout to continue the Premier League champions’ fine start to 2025.

Elsewhere, top-of-the-Championship Leeds United edged past League Two strugglers Harrogate Town at Elland Road.

The game was goalless at half-time but Largie Ramazani found the net with a header shortly before the hour mark to secure passage to the next round for Daniel Farke’s side.

The all-Championship contest between Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday went all the way to penalties after the two sides could not be separated over 120-minutes.

Liam Kitching gave Frank Lampard’s team the advantage with 26-minutes gone had preserved the lead until deep into second-half stoppage time.

However, Wednesday’s Anthony Musaba popped up with the equaliser with 93-minutes on the clock to send the game to extra time.

Neither team could find a winner during the additional half an hour and so the tie was to be decided by a shootout, which Coventry won 4-3.
