Meghan Markle’s Duchess Title On Instagram Raises Eyebrows

Meghan Markle has found herself at the center of an online buzz for a subtle mistake in her latest Instagram video.

The Duchess of Sussex rang in the New Year on the popular media-sharing platform with a video where she wrote 2025 on the shore of a beach.

However, Meghan sparked divorce rumors with Prince Harry as her duchess title on Instagram was written in a way reserved for divorced royals.

Meghan may have unintentionally sparked divorce concerns with her return to Instagram due to how she wrote her royal title.

Her beach video post has already brought the account to nearly 900,000 followers. However, one thing that puzzled fans is that her title on her Instagram page is written as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,” rather than the more conventional “Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex,” which she continues to use on her Sussex.com website.

It may seem like a minor error, but it has set tongues wagging. According to Newsweek, the royals use this title format to show a woman’s status as divorced, and Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson have used it in the past.

The former actress even ran into some issues in Buckingham Palace during a review in 2020 after she was erroneously listed as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex” in a palace statement.

At the time, royal commentator Alastair Bruce told Sky News, “The palace made an announcement about what the duke and Duchess were to be called. But it inadvertently gives all the wrong messages because, in convention, the style suggested is the one adopted to express divorce.”

“As a result, this will be revisited, and I’m sure that the expert, called Garter King of Arms, can provide advice,” Bruce continued. “What had been suggested was ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,’ but placing the first name and comma before the title is the template for a divorced wife.”

Fans Spot Blunder In Meghan’s Instagram Video

Meghan began the New Year with a cheeky Instagram video post as she returned from her 5-year hiatus from the popular video-sharing app.

The former “Suits” actress revealed a human side in her video, which delighted eagle-eyed royal fans who thought she filmed it more than once to get the “perfect” version.

The video saw her running barefoot towards the tide of a sandy beach to draw the near-perfect cursive digits of the New Year, “2025,” into the sand. However, some eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot that she seemingly wrote the number more than once.

At the beginning of the clip, Meghan is trying to find the best spot to write the numbers, but followers notice she walks past another “2025” inscription in the sands, along with some footprints. The blunder can be seen on the left side, perhaps hinting that she filmed it more than once.

The video, recorded by her husband, Prince Harry, then panned to her running off as she giggled.

Back in 2020, Meghan teased she’d return to Instagram in a conversation with The Cutafter being forced to shut it down in 2018 ahead of her royal wedding to Harry.

“Do you want to know a secret? I’m getting back … on Instagram,” she said at the time.

However, she has already used Instagram to promote her brand, American Riviera Orchard. Meghan reportedly launched the Montecito-based brand as an extension of her old blog, The Tig, noting that it will focus on home, garden, food, and general lifestyle.

A source close to Meghan told Harper’s Bazaar that her brand was “something more accessible … something rooted in her love of details, curating, hosting, life’s simple pleasures, and family.”

The source added, “Meghan is busy working on creating something safe and timeless. And something that won’t be accused of riding on the back of anything royal.”

As the new year kicks off, the Duchess of Sussex previously disclosed on her now-shuttered blog, The Tig, that she had two particular New Year resolutions that make her list “every single year.”

According to People Magazine, she noted that every year, she projects to stop swearing and to stop biting her nails.

“These make my New Year’s resolution list nearly (AKA actually every) single year,” Meghan wrote at the time.

“The swearing comes in lulls triggered by being overworked or feeling mighty cheeky after a couple of drinks,” she continued. “And when it comes to the biting of the nails — well, it still happens with a turbulent flight or a stressful day. It’s unladylike. But then again, so is the swearing. Dammit.”
