Oscar De La Hoya roasted manager Bill Haney in this week’s Clapback Thursdays episode, saying he’s messed up his son Devin Haney’s career by having him sue Ryan Garcia for battery after his loss last April in Brooklyn, New York.
Oscar: Fire Your Father, Devin!
De La Hoya says Devin needs to take control of his life and “fire” Bill. He thinks he’s wrecked what was once a promising career for the former two-division world champion with his decision-making.
Oscar says the lawsuit and Devin’s decision to sit inactive for an entire year have made his defeat much worse. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) could have bounced back from that loss by now if he’d gotten back in the ring instead of sitting and stewing on his defeat.
According to De La Hoya, Haney must win his fight against Jose Ramirez on May 2nd to get the rematch against Ryan in October.
If that’s true, there’s going to be a lot of pressure on Devin when he faces the former WBC and WBO 140-lb champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) in their co-feature fight on the undercard of Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero at Times Square in New York City.
“I feel sorry for Devin Haney because you hardly ever hear him speak because his dad does all the talking,” said Oscar De La Hoya during this week’s Clapback Thursdays. “Sure, Devin had a bad loss this year, but it shouldn’t have been career-ending. It could have been easily fixed.
“If it wasn’t for his father and manager, Bill, who single-handedly turned it into a more toxic situation than Chornobyl. I have never seen a big f*** up for a boxer’s career in my life. All Devin had to do after losing to Ryan Garcia last April was say, ‘He beat me. I couldn’t block his left hook,’ and then get back in the gym.
“Instead of focusing on a comeback fight in 2024 and teaching his son to block the left hook, Bill thought it was a better idea to have Devin sue Ryan for battery and emotional distress, to sue Golden Boy, to sue the New York Athletic Commission to get Devin’s loss expunged from his record, to fight a civilian at the Orange Country State Fair, to take the rest of the year off and to make as many enemies as possible. They’ve cemented their legacy as the biggest crybabies in the history of boxing.
“Now, last week, Bill and Devin were in London, begging Turki for a payday because they have no other options. The only value Devin has in this sport is to fight Ryan Garcia again. So, Bill, being the pimp that he is, hoed his son out again to the fighter that beat his a** so badly he had to sue him for battery. I couldn’t make this s*** up, folks.
“The rematch [Garcia-Haney] is to happen this October but under one condition. The Haney’s must drop their bull s**** lawsuit against Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy. Of course, the Haney’s are willing to drop it because they had no case whatsoever. I’ve never heard of a fighter suing another fighter for battery, and I’m certain we will never see it again unless Devin sues his next opponent.
Rematch on the Line: Haney vs Ramirez
“Anyhow, taking the rematch is a pretty risky move because if Devin loses to Ryan again, we can all wave goodbye to the Haneys. In order for Devin to get to that fight, he has to get by a tough and hungry Jose Ramirez in May. Watch out, Jose. If you hit him too hard, he might sue you next.
“Devin Haney, from one fighter to another, you have to take control of your life and career and fire your father. Everyone in boxing stood by and watched what happened this year, a year you were supposed to shine. You are now a punchline. Everyone sees he’s the problem. He [Bill] didn’t even stop the fight with Ryan Garcia when your jaw was broken and you were on the canvas.
“I hope you can come to your senses and decide to save yourself and part ways with your current manager before it’s too late. Sadly, it might be already,” said De La Hoya.
