Plant’s Shortlist: Berlanga, Charlo, Munguia

Caleb Plant revealed his three-fight shortlist of opponents he wants for his next bout. ‘Sweethands’ Plant wants to fight several fighters that could prove impossible for him to get .

The Wish List

– Edgar Berlanga
– Jermall Charlo
– Jaime Munguia

Plant has been calling out the New Yorker Berlanga for over a year with no luck, but there’s been no interest on the other end. Berlanga made a fortune fighting Canelo Alvarez, and it’s going to take a minor miracle for Plant to get that fight. I don’t see it happening.

As rich as Berlanga is now, he will be even more selective in choosing his opponents than he was before Canelo blessed him. The only thing that might persuade Berlanga to fight Plant is if Turki Al-Sheikh offers him a ton of money. Apart from that, he’ll stick to fighting the likes of Gabriel Rosado and William Scull.

Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) hasn’t fought in two years since his win over Jose Benavidez Jr. in 2023. He’s been seen working out recently, but he could be another one who is waiting around for Turki to offer him a big payday to fight someone like Canelo. He’s not going to take a risky fight against Plant coming off a two-year layoff.

Jaime Munguia was knocked out in his last fight by Bruno Surace, and he’s fighting him in a rematch in April. He might be interested in fighting Plant if he gets past that fight.

“I want the Berlanga fight. I want the [Jermall] Charlo fight. If Munguia can work his way back and being something that’s worth going after, I’d take that as well,”said Caleb Plant to Fight Hub TV about who he wants to fight next.

“It’s big on the list [becoming world champion again]. The only thing that’s more important to me is just making big fights.

“I give him [Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez] a chance. Terence is freakishly strong. He can punch. He’s got good crack. He can fight from both ways. Orthodox, southpaw. He can fight at midrange, close range and on the outside. He can fight going both ways.

Possibilities

Plant will probably have to lower his expectations and focus on someone like Diego Pacheco, Christian Mbilli, or Osleys Iglesias in his next fight. Those are the more realistic options.

“It’s a big question mark on the end of it. That’s why a lot of us are really excited to hear that bell ring and be able to find out firsthand,” said Plant about Crawford.

The former IBF super middleweight champion Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) kept his career alive with a ninth-round knockout of Trevor McCumby on September 14th.

Plant was dropped in the fourth and hurt on another occasion by McCumby. If not for his ability to take action to the inside, it might have ended badly for Plant.
