Player ratings as Hammers clinch spot in League Cup semi-finals

FROM BRISBANE ROAD – Tottenham Hotspur were left picking up the pieces on Monday night as West Ham’s 2-1 victory saw them knocked out of this year’s League Cup.

The Hammers will now come up against Women’s Super League (WSL) leaders Chelsea in the semi-final stage of the tournament on 5 February.

Striker Martha Thomas’ early goal in the first ten minutes helped Spurs find their rhythm as the first half got underway.

Centre-back Clare Hunt was instrumental on numerous occasions feeding the ball over the top of West Ham’s midfield, into the feet of Spurs’ front attacking line.

Notable chances included Thomas and Hayley Raso hitting the woodwork twice, as well as Bethany England’s countless attempts being stopped in their tracks by Hammers goalkeeper Megan Walsh.

However, things quickly turned sour when Seraina Piubel cruised one past Eleanor Heeps five minutes before the first half drew to a close, after a cross from Emma Harries.

West Ham’s equalizer was all it took for Spurs’ backline to crumble. Molly Bartip continued to lose out to Piuebel. It was a set piece though that left Spurs trailing 2-1, one minute before half-time.

Kirsty Smith’s ball into the box seemingly went unnoticed and glided into the right-hand corner of the net, leaving Heeps startled.

The second half passed by with little action. Spurs failed to intensify their efforts as West Ham protected their lead.

It was England with the most promising shot on target, but her sweeping effort was saved well by Walsh. As the game entered it’s final minutes, it was clear that Spurs had accepted defeat.

Rehanne Skinner will certainly be pleased with her team’s performance, as they get ready to battle it out in third League Cup semi-final in their history.
