Plymouth vs Liverpool: Preview, predictions and lineups

Liverpool make the long journey to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds booked their place in the Carabao Cup final on Thursday evening as they put four unanswered goals past Tottenham, reaching the final for the third time over the past four seasons. Their last FA Cup triumph came in 2021/22 when they beat Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea on penalties at Wembley.

Liverpool are Europe’s most devastating side this season and will be aiming to pile more misery on struggling Plymouth this weekend. The Pilgrims are currently sat bottom of the Championship but Miron Muslic has somewhat helped steady the ship since his appointment. He’s won one and drawn two of his five matches at the helm.

Plymouth made Liverpool work hard during their most recent meeting. They held the Reds to a goalless draw at Anfield in the FA Cup back in 2017 and were only beaten 1-0 in the replay at Home Park.

Here is 90min’s guide to Liverpool’s fourth round battle.

Plymouth’s injury list is not extensive but they will be without Brendan Galloway, who is out for the remainder of the campaign.

Kornel Szucs is also a significant doubt due to a muscle injury, but Joe Edwards is closing in on his first minutes since October after returning to team training. He’s unlikely to feature against Liverpool but will be back shortly afterwards.

Plymouth lost the influential Morgan Whittaker during the winter transfer window and will be hard pushed to replace his creativity.

Plymouth predicted lineup vs Liverpool (3-4-2-1): Hazard; Pleguezuelo, Katic, Talovierov; Sorinola, Randell, Houghton, Puchacz; Bundu, Wright; Hardie.

With a massive Merseyside derby to come on Wednesday, Arne Slot is likely to make sweeping changes against Plymouth. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton are the only injured members of his squad at present.

Harvey Elliott, Jarell Quansah, Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa are among the peripheral figures likely to be handed opportunities, with the latter opening his Liverpool account during the victory over Accrington Stanley in the third round.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Plymouth (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Bradley, Quansah, Endo, Tsimikas; Morton, Mac Allister; Chiesa, Elliott, Jota; Nunez.

Liverpool’s second-string XI should have few issues conquering the Championship’s worst side this season. The Pilgrims have conceded an astonishing 63 times in just 30 league matches, while they are also the division’s lowest scorers.

Liverpool’s fringe players have shown their ability to shine in the cup competitions already this term and they should enjoy themselves on the south coast. Slot will want to see his side run up the score and avoid any potential embarrassment en route to the fifth round.

Prediction: Plymouth 0-4 Liverpool
