Real Madrid open talks with Vinicius Jr over new deal to stave off Saudi interest

Real Madrid have reportedly opened talks with Vinicius Jr’s representatives as they attempt to ward off interest from Saudi Arabia and tie the Brazilian down to a new contract.

Spanish daily AS report Madrid have asked for what it would take to secure the winger’s long-term future with his current deal due to expire in 2027. Vinicius’ camp has responded and the ball is now back in the club’s court.

Madrid had not intended to open discussions until the summer, when the player would enter the final two years of his existing terms, but the growing interest from the Saudi Pro League has accelerated the need to bring the two parties together.

Although Vinicius is known to be understandably angry and frustrated that the issue of racism is still prevalent in Spanish football, he is willing to remain in Madrid.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s pulsating 3-2 win at Manchester City in the Champions League, he told TNT Sports: “I have a contract until 2027, but I have always said that I want to play here for a long time, to be able to make history and to receive the affection of the fans along with the president, all the players and the coaching staff.

“And God willing, hopefully in the next few days the whole negotiation can be resolved and I can stay here for much longer.”

Brazilian will seek a pay rise

AS report Vinicius’ current deal sees him earn around £12.5million a year net, the same base salary as Kylian Mbappe.

But Mbappe also received a £33m signing-on fee when he joined on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, boosting his annual salary to around £18.5m net and that is what Vinicius will also seek.

In addition, Madrid have to factor in the cost of renegotiating the contract of Jude Bellingham.

The England international has rapidly become a key player for the European champions – evidenced again by his winner at City in midweek – and AS report his representatives are also pushing for an improvement on his current £7.5m net annual salary.

Vinicius, 24, joined Madrid in July 2018 from Flamengo and has developed into one of the best players in the world.

He has also been instrumental in Madrid’s recent success, helping them to three La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns.
