Riley Meredith made a blunder like Allan Donald during the 1999 World Cup semi-final match between South Africa and Australia
Riley Meredith made a blunder like Allan Donald during the 1999 World Cup semi-final match between South Africa and Australia. The sillness by the former Proteas player cost them a place in the final of the tournament.
South Africa needed one run to win the game with one wicket. Lance Klusener, who was on the strike, hit the ball straight and ran for a single, but Allan Donald didn’t run until it was too late as he kept watching the ball instead of his batting partner.
However, as he realized that he had to run, he dropped his bat while Adam Gilchrist collected the ball behind the stumps, knocking off the bails. This saw Australia qualifying for the final because they finished higher in the Super Six table. Australia went on to beat Pakistan in the final and lift another trophy.
