Ruben Amorim admits Manchester United ‘need’ Marcus Rashford and would be ‘so much better’ with the England forward

Ruben Amorim admits Manchester United would be “so much better” with a fit and firing Marcus Rashford but has repeated his stance that the forward has to improve his attitude in training if he is to have an Old Trafford future.

Amorim was asked specifically about Rashford following the weekend win at Fulham and said: “It’s always the same reason. The reason is the training, the way I see what a footballer should do. In training, in life and it’s every day, every detail. So if things don’t change, I will not change.”

Speaking tonight ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League game with Steaua Bucharest in Romania, the Portuguese claimed he was speaking more generally, although he hinted Rashford has work to do to get back into his plans.

He said: “The situation is the same for every player. My sentence was that I wouldn’t put any player that doesn’t give the maximum.

“I didn’t say only Marcus Rashford. We are a better team with him, that’s clear, but until the right moment I won’t change my mind.”

He has to change – Amorim

Rashford has stated he is open to a “fresh start” away from United but a move has failed to materialise and with just over five days remaining in the January window, a deal is looking unlikely.

Should he remain at the club, it potentially creates a situation that would dominate the narrative around United for the rest of the season.

But Amorim said a resolution is possible but it depends on the player.

He added: “He has to change. If Rashford will change we are more than happy to have Rashford. We need him. But we have to set standards. We are waiting for Marcus if he wants. It’s not personal. I have nothing against Marcus but I have to make the same rules for everybody, for me it’s so simple.

“We need goals, we need threat in the final third.”
