Shakur Stevenson Ignores Critics, Chooses Schofield For Next Title Defense

Floyd Schofield posted on social that he’s received the contract and it’s a “Done deal” for the fight against Shakur Stevenson next.

We’re still waiting for Turki Alalshikh, Matchroom and Golden Boy to confirm that Shakur vs. Schofield is signed for February 22nd. Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) revealed on Saturday that he’d signed the contact. Today, he posted the cryptic message, “Baby food,” which obviously is referring to the 22-year-old Schofield.

Shakur’s Call

The 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakur seems happy because this is his baby, the guy that he wanted. For obvious reasons, Stevenson showed no interest in fighting Andy Cruz or giving Edwin De Los Santos a rematch. He knows his limitations. Apart from Shakur suffering an injury, Schofield is a safe choice with no real chance of winning.

Some fans were hoping that His Excellency Turki would veto Shakur’s idea of defending against the novice Schofield and insist that Stevenson fight Andy Cruz or Raymond Muratalla. That would have stopped this abomination from happening.

Fans Ain’t Happy

If the Stevenson vs. Schofield fight gets announced, it could end badly for Kid Austin, leaving him, Oscar De La Hoya, Shakur, and the fans looking foolish. I say the fans because many of them will be talking up the Shakur-Kid Austin fight, believing that it will be competitive, and they will be unhappy when it isn’t.

Schofield and his father, Floyd Sr., have been driving the process, pushing hard for the Shakur fight. They sound so certain of victory despite the young Kid Austin’s complete lack of experience. He looked terrible in his last fight against second-tier fighter Rene Tellez Giron on November 2nd. Fans believe the Schofields are thirsty. They know the payday is going to be good.

People wouldn’t mind Schofield fighting the Newark, New Jersey native Shakur for his WBC 135-lb title if he at least proved himself against some contenders, which he’s failed to do.

Would it be asking too much for Kid Austin to have beaten two or three of these talents?

  1. Andy Cruz
  2. Raymond Muratalla
  3. Abdullah Mason
  4. William Zepeda
  5. Denys Berinchky

“Told you all… done deal! Thank you for being a man of your word. Now let’s put on a great fight,” said Floyd Schofield on X, reacting to the news of Shakur Stevenson having signed the contract. “We got the contract…done deal💪🏽”

“I know I’ll be able to beat Shakur, and I’ve seen Floyd fight a little bit, and he’s a little bit of an aggressive fighter,” said Jamaine Ortiz to Fighthype, talking about his belief that Floyd Schofield will defeat Shakur Stevenson.

“I’ve seen him get dropped in his last fight, and he was able to get back up and finish it up,” said Jamaine about Schofield’s last contest against Rene Tellez Giron on November 2nd. “If he fights strong and puts on the pressure against Shakur, I think he can do very good and win the fight. I think Floyd can take him.”
