Stuttgart vs Bayern Munich: Lineups, stats and preview

Stuttgart vs Bayern Munich match preview

Bayern Munich can move 11 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga when they face one of the two sides to have finished above them last season by visiting Stuttgart on Friday (7.30pm GMT).

Stuttgart finished a point above Die Roten in second in 2023/24, and Sebastian Hoeness’s side will go fourth if they win for the first time in three matches.

“We have enough players in the squad who can score and create goals – the lads have shown and proven that often enough,” says Hoeness.

“We’ll need to perform at the highest level and with great focus for 90 minutes. We want to face Bayern with a passionate, courageous display and a really good performance.”

Bayern boss Vincent Kompany believes Stuttgart are “dangerous in every phase”. “They put a lot of pressure on and are also dangerous on the counter,” he observed.

“They work very hard… they run a lot and are strong in duels. I have a lot of respect for them. Nevertheless, we want to win; the task brings extra motivation.

“It’s never easy playing away against last season’s second-placed team. We just focused on that and didn’t take a single step less in the preparation, because this game is very important for us.

“It’s very interesting what [Hoeness] has achieved with Stuttgart. They are now getting back to the level they had last season. There’s a lot of quality in Germany in terms of [coaches]. He is one of them.”

Stuttgart vs Bayern team news

Leonidas Stergiou is out for Stuttgart with a heel issue the Switzerland international suffered in their 1-1 Bundesliga draw at Hoffenheim on Sunday.

Fellow centre-backs Ameen Al-Dakhil and Dan-Axel Zagadou, midfielder Nikolas Nartey and winger Luca Raimund are also injured.

Bayern goalkeeper Daniel Peretz has been working on the training pitch but is still sidelined while he recovers from a kidney injury.

Kompany played down the more concerning absence of Joshua Kimmich with a thigh problem. “We will solve it with our squad – we have done that for every position so far this season,” said the Belgian.

“Joshua is not the first to be out; we have had that with Harry Kane or Jamal Musiala. We have always shown a good reaction when we’ve had an injured player.”
