Sunil Gavaskar calls for BCCI’s intervention to protect pacer

Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has raised concerns over the workload of Jasprit Bumrah after he got injured during the recent Test series in Australia. Gavaskar called the Indian selectors to take urgent actions to safeguard India’s generational star Bumrah from being overworked.

The legendary batter urged the Indian selectors to make use of India’s abundant talent pool to nurture India’s bowling depth to ensure long-term success. However, the onus lies on the selectors to identify and nurture this talent by offering them chances at the highest level.

The legendary batter argued that without testing the emerging players on the international stage, they can never see their true potential, as Jasprit Bumrah’s absence in the second innings played a major role in India’s six-wicket defeat in the final Test against Australia.

Jasprit Bumrah should not be overburdened: Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying by PTI: “India has got loads of promising pacers who are waiting for an opportunity. Yes, Bumrah should not be overburdened, and if others step up, then we can have an attack that can win matches in any conditions. Unless they are given a chance, how will we know if those doing well in the Ranji Trophy will do well at the international level? Here’s where good selections come in.”

However, the former India captain praised the India selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, for identifying rising stars like Nitish Kumar Reddy, who had a brilliant Test debut series in Australia. Gavaskar further noted, “Compliments to Ajit Agarkar and his team for seeing the potential in Nitish Kumar Reddy and picking him for the Test squad too.”

Meanwhile, Indian cricket often finds itself in the spotlight for elevating its stars to celebrity status, but Sunil Gavaskar addressed this issue with a thought-provoking perspective. The legendary cricketer emphasized the importance of honest self-evaluation to maintain humility and focus amidst the glitz and glamour of fame.

The former Indian captain and well-known commentator compared personal growth to a journey of self-reflection, where players must take a hard look at their performances and recognize areas for improvement. He feels players can stay grounded and continue striving for excellence, both on and off the field, by consistently assessing themselves without bias.

Gavaskar signed off by saying, “We see our faces in the mirror every day, and since we do that to us, we don’t notice the changes that have come over the years. Only when we see photos or videos of earlier days do we notice the changes. It is then that we look to make the changes needed to look at our best. To do that, however, we need to take a long, honest look at ourselves again.”
