The incident that led to Marcus Rashford’s Man Utd exile revealed

Concerns over Marcus Rashford’s lifestyle away from football were behind Ruben Amorim’s decision to drop him from the Manchester United squad, it has been claimed.

Rashford was surprisingly left out of the travelling squad for last month’s Manchester derby and then missed a further three games before returning as an unused substitute for the defeat to Newcastle United last time out.

Amorim has repeatedly stressed that Rashford can force his way back into the fold, challenging him to “want it really bad” and “take responsibility” behind the scenes.

According to The Athletic, Amorim first confronted Rashford about his lifestyle in early December after claims he had been spotted in a nightclub less than 48 hours before scoring twice in a 4-0 win over Everton. The head coach made it clear he does not want players out in bars so close to games, but Rashford insisted Amorim had been misinformed.

However, this sparked memories of Rashford’s night out in Belfast in January, which saw him call in sick for a Friday training session and initially try to claim he was only out on the Wednesday, only for evidence to show he was also out on Thursday.

Rashford was first dropped to the bench, with rotation cited as a factor, before a disappointing performance in a training session on December 14, shortly before the derby, further frustrated Amorim.

Some argued he appeared fatigued and there were fresh claims Rashford had been out in a nightclub the night before the session. Rashford’s entourage have firmly denied these accusations, but Amorim made the decision to drop him from the squad and ramp up the pressure.

The way back to the squad for Rashford has been hampered by a bout of illness which will keep him out of Sunday’s meeting with Liverpool, but Amorim continues to stress publicly that Rashford will return to his team if he impresses in training.

Meanwhile, United remain open to offers for Rashford, who is believed to have turned down three huge proposals from Saudi Arabia, insisting he will only leave Old Trafford for a club who can help his quest to return to the England squad.
