Tottenham close in on Mathys Tel

Tottenham have seemingly won the race for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, just days after the Frenchman rejected a move to North London.

Tel initially told Bayern he wanted to leave in the January window after becoming frustrated with a lack of opportunities at the Allianz Arena but spurned an offer from Spurs despite chairman Daniel Levy flying to Munich.

The 19-year-old indicated he would stay at Bayern and reassess his future in the summer, only to perform a u-turn after speaking to Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

Tel is flying to London this afternoon, according to L’Equipe, to sign what is expected to be a loan deal.

The news will come as a relief for Postecoglou, who has been frustrated in his attempts to strengthen his injury-hit squad this month.

Although Kevin Danso joined yesterday from Lens, Spurs have been relatively quiet and had a £70million bid for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi rejected this morning.

Matters on the pitch have, at least, taken a turn for the better over the past week with Tottenham backing up Thursday’s 3-0 defeat of Elfsborg in the Europa League with an impressive 2-0 Premier League win at Brentford yesterday.
