The White House said on Tuesday that Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained by Russia, had been released and was returning to the US with Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff following “a show of good faith” by Moscow.

A statement from US national security adviser Mike Waltz said Witkoff was leaving Russian airspace and would be on American soil “tonight”.

President Donald Trump, Witkoff and other officials negotiated an “exchange that serves as a show of good faith from the Russians”, according to a statement released by national security adviser Mike Waltz.

He added that the US was moving in the “right direction” to end the war in Ukraine.
